Long-Tail and Niche Keywords Are Rising in Importance

Users are no longer typing "CRM" or "running shoes." They're asking:

·       "Best CRM for solopreneurs who use Gmail"

·       "Running shoes for wide feet with plantar fasciitis."

·       These long-tail queries are exactly what:

o   AI Overviews summarize and answer a query. If you think about it, Google didn't even answer the query before.

They showed you links to the information that best matched your query, and you had to go through their matches and figure out if what they gave you was the answer you were looking for. Today, AI Overviews summarize the meaning of the query and provide a clear answer.

They even go further. Google also provides a more detailed response for searchers, called a "Query fan-out", which is an AI search technique where a single user query expands into multiple related sub-queries, helping Google to understand the user's intent better and provide a more comprehensive result, with more relevant information.

Now, as AI search engines and LLMs evolve to understand user intent and context more deeply, they will eventually enable them to make highly targeted product recommendations. It's a big leap from providing a bunch of indexed web pages.

You can really see how fast SEO is changing. Instead of just searching for the exact keywords, the AI now explores various facets and subtopics of the original user query. They draw information from a broader range of sources and provide much more nuanced and complete responses. Google and other AI search tools now offer Content and information from sources beyond the initial search results. They take your intent and go further, and to show up brands need to do the same thing with their Content.

The Query Fan-Out doesn't just look for exact matches. It breaks down the query into its core components and related intents. For example: if a consumer searches for the "best electric SUV", the AI will pull a bunch of related queries and information, i.e., electric SUV safety ratings, EV charging infrastructure and information, model comparisons, local dealership information, manufacturer offers – you name it. The consumer is the big beneficiary; they get much more comprehensive answers that explore multiple related subtopics, which are a lot more in-depth and often more relevant to the consumer's underlying needs and intent.

For us, AI SEO professionals, we need to adapt to this shift and create Content that anticipates the query fan-out (sub-queries) and provides much more comprehensive answers to consumer questions. All of this ensures that the brands that lead in this area capture a larger share of their consumers' attention and purchases. Changing our approach now will lay the groundwork for the future.

Query fan-out breaks down into parts. High-intent searchers are used to making decisions. How to Optimize for Long-Tail:

·       Use natural, conversational phrasing in titles and headers

·       Build articles around micro-intents (e.g., "for freelancers," "under $50")

·       Use structured FAQs that echo real user language

·       Target "zero-volume" queries — they convert better and are more likely to be cited in AI.

·       These queries drive AI citation opportunities and bring the most qualified traffic.

Multimodal Content Drives User Engagement

AI tools increasingly prioritize multimodal Content, and users love it too.

Google has confirmed that it's blending text, video, and images into AI Overviews and product answers. Visuals are becoming increasingly crucial for branded AI interaction. They're also essential for AI SEO as every well-tagged visual is another AI asset to cite and summarize. In general videos:

·       Help AI summarize Content more richly

·       Increase dwell time and engagement

·       Add metadata-rich assets that AI systems can "read."

·       How to Optimize Visual + Video for AIO:

·       Embed relevant images or tutorial videos with:

·       Clear file names (video-seo-tips-2025.mp4)

·       Alt text and captions that reflect semantic meaning

·       Structured data (Video Object, Image Object)

·       Host videos on YouTube with transcript-rich descriptions

·       Link visuals to related blog content with Schema + internal links
